Search Bucktown real estate to find a wonderful, pedestrian-friendly neighborhood in the heart of Chicago. Whether you’re on the market for a historic mansion, a comfortable family home, or a modern condo, Bucktown real estate has just the right space to fit your lifestyle. After the great fire of 1871, many German and Scandinavian immigrants built brick brown- and gray-stone homes. These are now some of the most highly sought-after houses in the area. New construction is also readily available, mostly as condos but some modernist single-family homes, too. Much of the historic real estate has been renovated and upgraded with hardwood floors, energy efficient windows, stone counters, and stainless steel appliances.
Families considering Bucktown will be pleased with the many school choices. The public and public charter schools in the area perform at above-average levels. There are several Montessori schools, and great parochial schools. Bucktown is a great place to live for people who commute to downtown, as public transport options abound in the neighborhood. Several bus lines connect to the Red Line, and there’s a Blue Line stop, as well as a Metra stop. If you plan to drive, the Kennedy Expressway (I-94) runs through the neighborhood.
There are several streets with lots of shopping and dining choices, which gives residents plenty of walkable choices. A walking and running trail, called Bloomington Trail or the 606, is a great spot for residents to get outdoors for some exercise, as well as being a good way to get around the neighborhood. The trail is a renovated railway line. Bucktown Chicago has been a magnet for immigrants for many years, and the diversity of the area reflects that history. It was once the city’s Polish downtown, saw a large influx of German immigrants in the 1840s and 50s, and the last large immigrant wave was made up primarily of Cuban, Puerto Rican, and Mexican people. This history makes for the lovable and eclectic neighborhood today.
